Hangman's Knot

The hangman's knot, also referred to as the uni knot, is a fishing knot that can be used for attaching line to your reel, joining two lines together, or for attaching lures, hooks, and swivels to your line. Find out how to tie this easy, multipurpose knot.

Hangman's Fishing Knot

One of the most versatile fishing knots you can learn is the hangman's knot, which is also known as the uni or Duncan knot. This knot is easy to tie, has multiple uses, and can retain up to 90% of its original breaking strength.

Keep in mind that the hangman's knot is different from the hangman's noose knot, which is a boating knot that can be used to secure an eyelet on a rope without splicing it. The hangman's noose knot is not a fishing line knot, whereas the hangman's knot (also known as the uni knot or Duncan knot) is a fishing line knot.

Uses for the Hangman's or Uni Knot

One of the advantages of knowing how to tie a hangman's or uni knot is that it can be used with monofilament, fluorocarbon, and braided fishing lines. In addition, this knot can be used for different purposes.

  • Use to attach fishing line to the arbor of your reel.
  • Use when attaching hooks, lures, or swivels to your leader or tippet.
  • Use for joining two lines together. When this knot is used to join two lines it is referred to as a double uni knot

If you are learning how to fish, the hangman's or uni knot is a good knot to practice because it can be used in each of these situations.
